The healthcare system relies heavily on the use of computers to manage patient information and administer consistent and appropriate care.  Therefore, the healthcare professional must have a solid understanding of computer basics when working in any healthcare setting.  This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the different computer systems and operations that are used in the healthcare setting, including hardware and software applications.  Students will learn how to use word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and database software to manage daily office operations.  In addition, students will become familiar with the internet and technology assisted communication, as well as the guidelines surrounding information access, use and privacy.  Upon completion of this course, students will be fully prepared to utilize computer technology to perform administrative and patient care functions in a healthcare setting.

Curriculum Developer Biography:

Willow Nolland is an expert in education and eLearning, with more than ten years of experience in curriculum development and instructional design. She has worked in higher education for over twelve years, and has developed numerous courses and has been involved in curriculum development across disciplines. She has experience with academic program development and coordination, curriculum development, student learning outcomes, educational partnerships, and student development. In addition, she has developed and administered professional development programs for various groups, including teachers, counselors, healthcare workers and members of private industry. She is a certified Quality Matters Reviewer and has taken graduate courses in online course development. She designs and teaches online courses at the college level and is proficient in a variety of course management systems. She has helped educators redesign their courses to transition them from a face-to-face format to an online format, and has provided course editing assistance to others. As a freelance instructional designer and curriculum developer, her projects have included course editing and redesign of online continuing education courses for nurses, CEU curriculum development for healthcare workers and teachers, and course review and editing for various colleges and universities.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Overview of Computer Basics for Healthcare Professionals

In this lesson, you will receive an overview of computer basics for healthcare professionals.  You will learn about the basic components of a computer and the role of computers in the healthcare setting.  You will also learn about the computer operating system and the different software applications used by healthcare professionals.  This lesson is intended to serve as an introduction to the different types of computers and their functions.  Future lessons will expand upon the basics to provide an in-depth understanding of how computers are used in the healthcare setting.

Lesson 2: Introduction to Word Processing

In this lesson, you will learn about the different word processing programs used in the healthcare setting.  You will learn how to use these programs and their applications to produce documents.  Upon completion of this lesson, you will have a thorough understanding of word processing programs and they ways in which they are used in a healthcare setting.

Lesson 3: Introduction to Presentation Graphics

This lesson will provide instruction on the various types of tools that can be used to develop presentation graphics.  Students will learn how to work with different programs to create dynamic presentation graphics that can be used to enhance instruction and informative presentations in the healthcare setting.

Lesson 4: Introduction to Spreadsheets

In this lesson, you will learn how to use spreadsheets to organize and analyze information.  You will learn about the different functions and formulas used in spreadsheets, and will gain the skills necessary to use spreadsheets in daily office management tasks.

Lesson 5: Introduction to Databases

In this lesson, you will learn about the role of databases in the healthcare setting.  You will learn about the different database processes, as well as how to build and maintain a database.  Upon completion of this lesson, you will be well-versed in database applications management and will be prepared to apply your skills to a healthcare setting.

Lesson 6: The Internet and Technology Assisted Communication

In this lesson, you will learn about the internet and technology assisted communication.  You will learn how to use these features to enhance and improve the communication process is a healthcare setting.  You will also learn about the potential complications that may arise when relying on technology based communication, and will develop strategies to manage any complications.

Lesson 7: Information Access, Use and Privacy

In this lesson, you will learn about the importance of information access, use, and privacy.  You will learn strategies that you can use to unsure that these important elements are maintained, as well as the problems that will arise if they are not maintained.  Upon completion of this lesson, you will have a thorough understanding of information access, use, and privacy and their role in the healthcare setting.
